10GBASE-T: STP or UTP

Among the various technologies supporting 10G Ethernet, 10GBASE-T has become the choice of most people. In new 10GBASE-T installations, most users prefer unshielded twisted pair (UTP) copper cabling solutions, but more and more users are opting for shielded copper solutions. With the passage of the IEEE 802.3an 10GBASE-T standard, there is renewed interest in the relative merits of unshielded and shielded cabling systems. At the same time, the ability of unshielded cabling systems to support emerging applications is still controversial in the industry, and the focus of the controversy is whether it can pass electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) tests.

What Are STP and UTP

Unshielded twisted pair, unshielded jacket, only one layer of insulating plastic wrap, small diameter, flexible networking, easier to install, and relatively cheap, suitable for integrated wiring. Unshielded twisted pair cable has the following advantages:

  1. Unshielded jacket, small diameter, save the space occupied;
  2. Light weight, easy to bend, easy to install;
  3. Minimize or eliminate crosstalk;
  4. flame retardant;
  5. With independence and flexibility, it is suitable for structured cabling.

Shielded twisted pair cables have strong resistance to external interference due to the presence of a shielding layer. In a strong interference environment, the shielded cable is more stable and safe. The outer layer of shielded twisted pair cable is wrapped by aluminum platinum to reduce radiation, but it cannot completely eliminate radiation. The price of shielded twisted pair cable is relatively high, and it is more difficult to install than unshielded twisted pair cable.

10GBASE-T UTP Cabling

CommScope Labs’ systems engineering team worked with NTS, an industry-leading independent provider of EMC engineering and compliance testing services, to test CommScope’s unshielded cabling infrastructure. Test results show that Cat6A UTPs, including CommScope’s unshielded cabling solutions, fully support 10GBASE-T in a variety of “noisy” environments. It is a stable medium suitable for 10GBASE-T.

UTP AND STP

10GBASE-T STP Cabling

Although CommScope’s technology in unshielded is very mature. But in order to meet the preferences of different customers, CommScope has also introduced shielding solutions in recent years. Like the unshielded 10 Gigabit copper solution, the new STP solution can use a 1-meter patch cord and a 3- or 5-meter cable, allowing customers to enjoy full design freedom. Customers who prefer shielded infrastructure can deploy short shielded channels in the data center and beyond.

Enhanced shielding solutions support the bandwidth needs of today’s enterprises, even for more demanding applications. Such as HD video, cloud computing, data center and storage area networks, network attached storage (SAN/NAS). For customers who prefer unshielded infrastructure. Morgan Kurk recommends the new Category 6A patch panel: “The new patch panel based on UTP (unshielded copper) 10GBASE-T network provides more flexible design and more intelligent options.

Since the new Category 6A unshielded patch panels, as well as the shielded patch panels, are based on the Evolve patch panel platform, including the iPatch smart patch panel, field upgrades to the smart patch panel are easy and won’t cause any network interruptions . By integrating CommScope’s industry-leading network intelligence solutions, unshielded and shielded patch panels give customers visibility into and control over unshielded and shielded physical layer infrastructure, respectively.

Conclusion

Like all CommScope infrastructure solutions, QSFPTEK 10GBASE-T unshielded and shielded 10 Gigabit copper solutions are designed and manufactured to the highest standards of performance and reliability. Trust the design, performance and intelligence of this solution to meet the business needs of more companies.
