What is an expository essay?

Expository essays are academic style of writing that relies on factual information to present or analyze an issue. The word “expository” comes directly from “expose.” It means explaining or clarifying things in great detail. In this kind of writing, a particular subject is studied and described. Any claims made in this kind of essay should be supported by evidence.

How to write an expository essay

Make your essay expository in MLA format. You must follow the basic five-paragraph structure.

  1. Writing and outlining.

For a well-organized five-paragraph essay, you must make time to write down the essential notes and conduct research on the topic of your expository essay. After taking time to think of ideas and brainstorm, you can create an outline for your expository essay, which outlines the information you intend to include in every paragraph. Before beginning your initial draft, you should remind yourself to write in the third person to ensure you don’t make your personal opinion known.

  1. Write an introduction paragraph.

The first paragraph of your essay should contain the topic sentence which clearly defines your argument or the main idea of your essay. A well-written thesis should be straightforward enough that you are able to back it up with the three paragraphs in your body.

  1. Write three Body Paragraphs.

Each paragraph within the body of your essay should be focused on a specific topic that can help create and reinforce your thesis statement in the topic sentence. You must ensure that you are using accurate data to support your argument and maintain an objective perspective. It’s crucial to ensure every paragraph is based on a clear topic and starts with a topic statement. Diverse subjects (all relevant to the overall theme in the paper) must be presented in a coherent order and with clear passages between paragraphs.

  1. Write a closing paragraph.

The paragraph you write should contain only the information you’ve already provided earlier in your essay. This paragraph should be used to reiterate your thesis, outline your arguments from every section, then conclude the essay.

Review all of the key points, but don’t repeat them all over again. The importance of your subject and offer an answer if you have solved a problem.

Create a strong bond between these components to form a solid foundation. Make sure you meet all specifications required for the writing of your expository essay. Also, follow the guidelines of your instructor.

  1. Edit and Proofread.

Review your essay and make sure your thesis is clear and backed with credible information from reliable sources. Be sure to provide all information in an objective manner. Create paragraphs that flow and are rational. Also, proofread the text to correct grammar mistakes and poor choice of words.
