There is no better way to exercise than with a trampoline! Jumping on a trampoline uses gravity and aerodynamics to provide an energetic and fun workout for the whole family. With that said, it’s important that you know what your trampoline is capable of and not buy one that will be too challenging for you. Read this guide to find out how much weight your trampoline can hold in order to avoid breaking it or injuring yourself.

Why is weight capacity important?

Weight capacity is one of the most important factors to consider when purchasing a trampoline. If you’re looking at buying a trampoline, make sure that it can support the weight of your family members and friends. When choosing a trampoline, many people tend to choose a lighter-weight model for their children and an adult-size model for themselvesRelifesports.

What are some of the types of trampolines?

Trampolines come in all different shapes and sizes, and you’ll find a few basic types of the trampoline. Generally speaking, the most popular types are rebounders, mini-trampolines, and double-sided safety net trampolines.

Rebounders

Typically use springs to provide the bounce that’s necessary for a full-body workout.

Mini-trampolines

Are smaller than full-sized trampolines, but they’re ideal for small children or adults who want to get onto a trampoline without dealing with the hassle of folding it up and carrying it around.

Double-sided safety net trampolines

Allow two people—or more—to jump on at the same time while providing extra safety measures in case something goes wrong.

Trampoline Shapes

There are three main trampoline shapes: round, rectangular and octagonal. Round trampolines are the most popular shape, and are best for a single person jumping depending on the size. For instance, an 8 ft. round trampoline would be good for a single child. If you have more than one child using it, you will need to increase the size and possibly switch to an octagonal shape to spread the weight out over a larger surface. Octagonal trampolines are great for multiple users because they can jump higher and longer on them.

A rectangular shape is perfect for teens and those interested in gymnastics. There is more jumping surface and more room for flips and tricks

Determining Size and Weight Capacity

If you are looking to purchase a trampoline for children, for yourself, or for family use, a lot will depend on how much weight it will need to hold. If you have one child, a smaller 7 – 8 ft trampoline will work fine. Typically, a 7 – 10 ft. trampoline can hold up to 150 lbs.

For more than one child, or a couple of teenagers, a 12 ft. trampoline is a better option. A trampoline of this size will hold 250 to 300lbs.

A trampoline that is 14ft. will hold up to 350 lbs. And a 15ft. trampoline will hold up to 450 lbs. This works best for families with more than one child, who like to do things together. For example, mom &dad and two kids can jump on a 15 ft. trampoline at the same time, providing their combined weight does not exceed the weight limit.

Safety Net or No Net?

When it comes to deciding on whether or not you need a net, consider how high the jumpers will be in the air. Smaller kids can jump between 6 and 8 feet in the air, teenagers and adults can jump as high as 16 feet. Also, taller heavier people can jump higher than shorter, lighter people. Your trampoline should have a high enclosure net to provide safety and prevent anyone from falling out of it while jumping. If you have ever watched those funny videos, you’ll see that people often fall out of trampolines while jumping on them.

Indoor and Outdoor Trampolines

The type of trampoline you buy will depend on how you intend to use it. There are trampolines designed for indoor and outdoor use. Trampolines designed for outdoor use will be made of waterproof materials and may come with tie downs to keep them from blowing away during windstorms. Outdoor trampolines are typically used for families that may not have a lot of backyard space, but want a safe place for their kids to jump and play.

Indoor trampolines are smaller, may or may not have a net, and are designed for a single person. This is best for those who are looking for a workout tool to help them strengthen their legs and improve their cardio endurance. An indoor trampoline for home use is designed to hold the weight of an adult person between 120 and 300 lbs. A rebounder with a support handle and durable springs will hold up great for workouts.

For a small trampoline workout, a 36 – 50 inch rebounder works well. They have models that come with a handle and fold up for easy storage so you can take them anywhere. Great for working out while on vacation.

Another choice would be an indoor trampoline with net for freestyle workouts. A larger jumping surface, plus a safety net is great for gymnasts and those who like to practice flips and high jumps.

FAQs About Trampoline Weight Limits

When you are thinking to buy a trampoline, knowing the weight limit is an important point for safety. Here are a few frequently asked questions about weight limits.

1. Why do trampolines have weight limits?

Trampolines are designed with weight limits to prevent accidents and injury. That is why it is important that you buy a trampoline that will fit your needs.

2. Why do you need to know weight limits on trampolines?

If you need a trampoline for 2 or 3 kids, or a single adult, you will need to know how much weight the trampoline will hold. A trampoline made to hold 150 lbs would only work for one person at a time, weighing less than that designated limit. A trampoline that holds 600 lbs would let 4 -5 people of varying weights jump together, as long as their combined weight didn’t go over that limit.

3. What happens if you exceed the weight limit on a trampoline?

Exceeding the weight limit can result in accidents, injury, and damage to the jumping mat, springs, or the frame itself. You should size your trampoline according to weight and size needed.

Conclusion

A trampoline is an investment in your family’s health and fitness. They can be costly, so buying the appropriate size is an important point. You don’t want to spend the money, only to discover that it is too large or too small for your needs. For something you are going to use for many years, it is a good idea to check all the important information including the trampoline weight limit before buying it.
